My mother and I had an absolutely wonderful time at the Perky Kettle. From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly and fell in love with the quirky decor. The menu was easy to read and understand. We ordered tea and some food, which were served to us quickly. Highly recommend the “wedding tea” blend, it was delicious! Our tea was brought out with a really cool timer that told us how long to steep the tea for various “done” levels. The Cornish Pasty and Welsh Rarebit were both very yummy. Scones were great as well and the rosemary shortbread is a must try! Our server was kind, friendly, and made us feel right at home. We will 100% be back and we recommend this place to everyone! It’s a FUN place to make memories and relax!
Disappointing all around. My friend and I had the steak and cheddar Cornish pasty. It was very salty and there was very little cheese to be found in it. Side salad was fresh but the accompanying apple slices as described in the menu failed to appear. The London Steak and Ale Ceapaire also had a very small slice of cheese and was just so-so. The chicken salad was excellent. We ate at 5:30 and two dishes were sold out. The Thai tea and peppermint hot chocolate were excellent. But the service ... it was quickly obvious that our server was solo for the evening. We found ourselves ignored for the most part. We sat for over 30 minutes after we had clearly finished our meal waiting for his return so we could order dessert. Despite passing our table on his way to others, he never glanced our way. We finally gave up, got up, and doned our coats. At that point, he approached us. No apology. No thank-you for our patience while we were ignored. My friend went elsewhere for dessert. There are several other tea houses in the area. We will explore those.
I like many parts of the Perky Kettle but after coming here 3x and facing the same issue, I knew I had to review them and get this out in the open. The menu clearly states that the CREAM Tea option includes clotted cream. Every server ever (and somehow it was ALWAYS someone's first day. What the heck is my luck? Also, it's literally called CREAM tea. If clotted cream is not included and an upcharge, where the heck is the cream from? Include the dang clotted cream! On a first date here, the server (I know it's not her fault dropped our entire tray of 3 jams and scones. Then she came back with only 1 replacement scone. I asked what about the jams and she seemed surprised that I still wanted them...well, you dropped the first set so we didn't get any...really? The high tea option is quite pricey! It's $25 a person and really not enough food to count as $50 worth. The establishment is an old Victorian cramped house with cute decor but soooo narrow and squeezed. PLEASE update the bathroom! You must remember to lock 2 different doors to use it. The toilet bowl itself looks about 200 years old and the tap is broken. It's um....wow...
