Bidrage med feedbackA nice walk from Rif Pordoi (and close by cable car station) brings you first over flat moonscape-like terrain with some last snow and then over steeper ground with some protection to Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa (there is also a easy signposted Route). It’s the most prominent point of the Sella group at 3152m, so it makes sense to get here on the last day to spot all the previous ascents and huts visited during a trip. The aroma of wood smoke from the little wood stove wafts down the slope and promises a cozy night. A night with breakfast costs €30 (the hut sleeps 22 in total) and I feel very sorry that I did not take this opportunity. Next time! The small mountain hut is middle aged but well kept by the family of the Luigi Bernard who built it in 1968. It is much more of an original than the big purpose built tourist huts. The wooden terrace is South facing and provides glorious views of Marmolada which looks close enough to touch. The very nice waitress quickly serves the Apfelstrudel and cafe latte (no latte macchiato here). As always everything tastes extra special at a bit of altitude. This particular Apfelstrudel features a lot of healthy cinnamon. Although all supplies are transported up by helicopter the prices are not much higher than at lower, more accessible huts. The terrace and hut fill up quite a bit after 11:00am when the cable car loads start to arrive. Treat yourself like most guests here to a large beer. It sparkles enticingly in the sun! PS after 12:00: despite virus season and the middle of the week there was queuing on the way down from the Rifugio and a continuous stream of tourists visible on the moonlike landscape. If you want to enjoy Rif Cap. na Fassa with a bit of peace quiet you better walk up before the cable car starts at 9:00!
This small hut is perched right on the peak of Piz Boe. It is great when you are there but frankly an eyesore from ten miles away when the man made shape hurts the eye compared to the sweep of the mountain ridges. Provides very welcome refreshments to those who have climbed the peak and an alpine toilet worth a visit if you haven’t previously had the experience!
Hiking to Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa is breathtaking and the effort is totally worth it. Located at 3152m this hut is easily one of the best and must do in Dolomites! A true alpine hut. The check-in process was easy and everything changes when you are greeted by a smiling staff. The service was great, we chose the half board which included soup with bread, main course and a dessert. Home made wine was really good too. Breakfast is limited but enough to fill your tummy. We were lucky enough to witness a double rainbow in the evening. It's a bird's eye view from up here and one has to witness it to believe it. Literally on top of Dolomiti. This hut has 22 beds but only 1 restroom (squat style) which can be tricky in the mornings. (One has to be lucky to get bunk mates who are considerate to others, especially after 10pm in mountain huts. Unfortunately we were not that lucky and had a broken sleep). Thanks to Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa for making our stay in Dolomites memorable.
We spent a night on the very top of Piz Boé. Apart from the fantastic view, we enjoyed a good and big supper, cozy beds and the unique atmosphere. The staff was very nice and helpful, Coffee was great and there was lots of it at breakfast. I would highly recommend to book a bed in advance and bring warm clothes for sunset and rise. We had a great time and it is quite affordable for the location. (There are no showers and you have to pay for drinking water. Both is absolutly understandible considering the location.
I've never had a better experience at a mountain cabin. Great people, great foods, great sunrise, great toilet. Once you finish your trip up and your boots are soaked in snow, they provide a fire to warm the boots and house shoes to warm your feet. I just cannot think about a bad thing about this cabin after we finished our hike down, Guido from the cabin actually recognised us on the road! All the best to everyone up there and I hope to visit again.
