Tackle Box - Calumet-Norvelt

I ended up with something that had basil-walnut pesto. It was tasty, but not what you’d expect from a lobster shack. I feel like this place is struggling to define itself. I’m not a professional critic; I’m just a lover of good seafood. Unfortunately, the oysters I had were overcooked and sourced from who-knows-where, likely Maryland or somewhere else, but definitely not from Maine waters. The cold, overly seasoned french fries were also disappointing. The macaroni and cheese was just okay—nothing like the comforting version I’d have at a church supper in Maine, complete with buttery crumbs and a creamy cheese sauce. And parsley? Mainers don’t put parsley on anything, especially not on our macaroni. I’m writing this review because I feel let down by the promise of good Maine seafood. Instead, I got something that felt like it came from just any old restaurant in D.C. I think they need some menu adjustments before I’d consider returning.

The restaurant features rustic wooden trestle tables and benches, which sets the perfect atmosphere for a hearty fry-up. I ordered the clam roll, but they kindly substituted oysters upon my request. It gave off the vibe of a cozy neighborhood eatery you'd find in New Orleans, although I have to say, the bread there is superior. My son opted for the lobster roll, and while I didn't taste it, it had an appearance similar to canned meat paste. Later on, I had to take some calcium carbonate to combat the greasiness.

I found the Tackle Box to be a decent spot for seafood. The ambiance is quite unique, featuring long wooden tables with benches. Unlike some other reviewers, I opted for the Maine Meal, which includes one entree, two sides, and a sauce. I went with the grilled trout accompanied by asparagus and cornbread for about $13. I thought the fish was well-cooked and flavorful, but the portions were a bit on the small side. It's a solid choice for lunch if you're exploring the Georgetown area. While it may not compare to a meal from seaside Connecticut or Massachusetts, it offers good value for what you get.
