Bidrage med feedbackA friend of mine lived and worked in Ethiopia for a while so we decided that our next dinner together would be at her favourite Ethiopian restaurant in town – Ensira. I’ve eaten Ethiopian once before, in Edmonton, with a very large group of people. I had a general expectation of what to expect – a large tray in the middle of the table with food piled on top. You use the soft bread (injera) to scoop up the food and eat with your hands. You definitely need to wash your hands both before and after this meal.
I have visited Ensira several times and it is definitely my top choice for Ethiopian cuisine in town. The restaurant is beautifully renovated, clean, and organized. The atmosphere is pleasant, with very friendly and attentive service. The food is delicious, fresh, and authentic. My only complaint would be that when the restaurant is busy, it can take some time to get the server's attention. It would be helpful if servers checked in more regularly and offered more injera. When dining with a large group, the injera provided with the meal can disappear quickly and may need to be replenished.
My first taste of Ethiopia at Ensira was delicious! We ordered the Yetsom Beyaynetu (various spices vegetables) and Kikil (seasoned lamb meat), both served with injera. The flavours of each dish were unique and one which I’ve never tried before. The injera is an acquired taste for some, but it was a perfect accompaniment to mop the flavours of the curries. The restaurant is hidden and tucked away along a street mall. It’s quite spacious inside with many tables. Ensira is really clean and modern, with a few decorations on the walls.
I completely agree with amanvel's review. We have visited most, if not all, of the Ethiopian restaurants in Calgary (and many others elsewhere, including Ethiopia) and Ensira surpasses them all in terms of its relaxing atmosphere, and matches the best in terms of food and service. It is a significant improvement from the former Ibex restaurant that occupied this location, although it must be noted that the Ibex had a charming atmosphere. I won't go on about the food, but if you are familiar with Ethiopian cuisine, you will not be disappointed, and if not, this is the perfect place to give it a try. It is truly unlike anything you have ever tasted before. If you enjoy it and want to try cooking it at home, you can purchase the bread, spices, and other ingredients next door at Ethio Afrik.
Ensira sets a new standard for Ethiopian restaurants in Calgary. The restaurant, which is relatively new, is elegantly decorated, clean, and has a fantastic ambiance that is perfect for both intimate dinners and larger groups. The service is excellent, with attentive staff and quick service. The menu offers a good variety of options, with delicious vegetable combinations and beautiful presentation. Additionally, the coffee roasting and fresh traditional bread provided while waiting for your meal are lovely touches. I will definitely be returning to Ensira for their doro wat firfir, kitfo, shiro, and vegetable combo.
