Penny Cluse Cafe - Burlington

Despite being crazy busy, the staff was so gracious with me and my order. They did me right and the food was great. One of the things I had was the biscuits and gravy and it came to me green. Being raised in North Carolina, biscuits and gravy are a staple, so when it was green, I was initially quite intrigued. But it was great. All the good we ordered was great. Definitely will go back

While the menu itself is not vegan friendly, I go their frequently and the staff was nice enough to mark up an old menu for me indicating what they recommend for vegan modifications. My favorite is the veggie Rueben, made vegan and adding avocado. I usually get it with a side of tofu scram with peanut sauce. Their tofu scrams are inconsistent and sometimes are more like giant hunks of plain tofu with a touch of sauce.

There’s pretty much only one thing vegans can get for breakfast and one for lunch... the tofu scramble with peanut ginger sauce is amazing!! but even the homefries have butter in them and the pesto has cheese. for the tofu randy is really good but everything else requires a lot of modifications.

I am very surprised to read the poor reviews here on Happy Cow. Penny Cluse is a don't miss for me every time I visit Burlington, which is about 4 times per year. When we go for brunch my vegan boyfriend and I always order the tofu scram with peanut ginger sauce. We get the toast un buttered and a fruit plate instead of the potatoes. It may be the only vegan breakfast option, but it's sooooo good. It would be awesome if they'd make the potatoes with oil instead of butter, but they don't. We are always prepared for a wait. While the staff does seem busy, no one is ever rude. In fact, I find the opposite that they are always very friendly. And I've always felt like they've tried to make up for it with speed from the kitchen or free juice if the restaurant is chaotic. By the way, the fresh juice is amazing. We take non veggies here and they love the food, so if you need a place for brunch for both vegans and non vegans, this is your place!

One of the dishes I tried was the biscuits and gravy, which arrived with a green twist. Growing up in North Carolina, I always knew biscuits and gravy to be a traditional dish, so seeing it in green was quite a surprise. However, it turned out to be delicious. Everything we ordered was fantastic. I will definitely be coming back!
