Bidrage med feedbackIf you want to support a family owned bodega inside a divey, somewhat sketchy convenience store and eat some Puerto Rican food, come to El Viejo. It's a chaffing dish style setup with the food sitting out/heated, $14 for a large and I think around 9-10 for a small. There are pork/chicken options as well as Cassava (yuca!!! with sides of yellow rice and pastellios available as well. I tried the chicken stew with yellow rice and some Cassava. I think the Cassava was the best thing served that day. Very unique and not something you'd find in many places. The flavor was light and fragrant and almost tasted like a light potato. The chicken stew over rice was decent, with the chicken being so tender and slow cooked with potatoes and carrots, although not something that would be too difficult for me to replicate at home. The pastelitos were greasy and delicious with straight grease dripping down as you bite in...so hard to not like that. It's easy to question the conditions and masks requirements were not always complied with during COVID times which was unfortunate, but I very much appreciate that we have an authentic hispanic bodega of sorts and was grateful to try the food. No real dining, so you just take it to go. I went and ate the food at Riverside Park nearby and enjoyed the cooler summer evening. All in all, it's worth coming here to try the Cassava at the very least. Just expect it to be a divey sort of setup.
Stopped in for some pastillios today and they were delicious. Fresh and big not greasy at all.
They had pastelillos in the warmer but the man offered to fry some fresh ones, and man were they good. The shell was light and flaky, and the meat had a delicious blend of traditional seasoning, not just salt. The cheese seemed like good quality too.
You want a Home cooked Puerto Rican meal this is the place! Great service too!
There food had bugs in it
