Bidrage med feedbackFirst, let me say, I’m not mad, I don’t want anything free, and I’m not a “Karen”. But the whole meal was underwhelming. I’m a Perry’s guy, but my wife wanted to branch out. So, canceled Perry’s and made a Rez for Hot and Hot. It didn’t start off well with our server when I asked for some cheese biscuits. He brought them but admonished me that while he brought the biscuits and that was okay, the chef wanted me to order the app and entrees at one time so that it could all be brought out on schedule. Tell me when I ordered them and I would have said okay to waiting or even cancelling them. But to be admonished on ordering an app was a bad start. My wife was almost through with her her entree before they brought her beverage. I reminded him and to be fair he gave it to her for free. I had the rabbit. It was with sausage and room temperature. Temp aside, you couldn’t taste the rabbit for the sausage. It was much more sausage medallions than rabbit. The scorched corn side wasn’t really a side. It was more a garnish. My wife had the mahi. It was decent, but nothing special. She rated it 3 outta 5. Back to service. He was much more interested in attending to the table of 6 next to us. I ordered a Havana and Torino cocktail (a bourbon- rum drink and he corrected me on the pronunciation of it. So, in a moment of pettiness I corrected him when I ordered a weiss beer when he mispronounced it and he said, “Sure, if you want to be that way.” (Ha! .Anyway. Carrot cake for dessert. It was very good. Easily, the best part of the meal. Finished with some Blanton’s that took a long time to arrive. It’s in a warehouse. Next to Pepper Place. Total tab for 2 with tip was $200. And it was underwhelming, especially service. Maybe they had a bad night, but we won’t be back.
This was a letdown. We’d heard mixed reviews but wanted to try as it’s been a Birmingham staple. .Over all the food lacked flavor and there was a lot missing in the composition in the dishes. My steak had been barraged with steak seasoning and then nuked in fire. I think it had passed its prime date as there was a slight off taste. Hence the nuking a steak seasoning. The dish overall wasn’t served with any sauce or purées. Which made for an….experience to say the least. For some odd reason the waiter told us the cut of steak was a Waygu Coulotte. I knew that was impossible based on the price alone. ??. Idk why he did that.My partner nor I remember what they ate as it was forgotten as soon as we left the building. The best thing was the bread service. Wouldn’t go back
Mediocre on all accounts. There is better fine dining in Birmingham for certain. Service was unbelievably slow. It took forever for our waiter to first approach us after sitting. The food was good, but not exceptional. I expected more flavor for the price point. Our entrees were sloppily plated--as if thrown together in a rush. My duck came out cold. Additionally, the room was extremely loud. It was hard to talk across the small table. In addition, the attire of the waiters adorning blue jeans is an interesting choice... Finally, our (expensive) cocktails were watery. Talk about disappointing. Personally, would not recommend.
We’ve been eating at Hot and Hot for years. At the old location there was never a hiccup. Amuse bouche, wine recommendations, attentive servers, immaculate food, and realistic prices for such a wonderful restaurant. However now, it’s inconsistent. More often than not we’ve had subpar service for an establishment with this kind of reputation. Empty plates sitting too long, empty water glasses, inattentive wait staff. Salads are too salty and heavy in dressing, no more amuse bouche, soufflé was dry and no longer prepared table side. It’s just not a special place anymore. And the only consistently good thing is the entrees. Not to mention that while entree prices have remained steady, now bread service is $10, mediocre salads are $18, and desserts are also increased beyond their worth.
Restaurant was very much vouched for by everyone we knew. It was our first date night in a while, since we have a one year old and it was a letdown. The restaurant itself was gorgeous and the waiter, Austin, did a great job. But the ravioli appetizer was lukewarm at best with fatty pork. For the first time in my life, I had to send my dish back. The duck dish had underdone beans and basically no flavor. My wife’s snapper was great, which made my dish taste even worse. Austin even informed us that the chef tried the dish and agreed with us that it was subpar. The crazy is thing is that nobody from the kitchen nor the manager felt like saying anything to us about it, only Austin, despite the restaurant being half full at 8:00 on a Saturday. To their credit, they took it off our bill and gave us a free dessert. But I must say, for this price tag, this place isn’t worth the time. Apparently they are quite an institution in Birmingham. Well, that could change very quickly if they rest too much on their laurels.
