La Vieille Auberge - Brioude

Superb home cooked food (cold salmon and salads from the buffet, perfect sirloin steak and home made bilberry tart) is served with a welcoming smile. All for a very reasonable price. This is how I remember rural France in the 80s and 90s but more difficult to find now. Just right and open on a Monday evening!

Perhaps not the greatest food in the world, but served with great kindness and warmth by the friendly host. The food was well cooked and tasty but perhaps lacked a little in terms of 'presentation '. But certainly a very friendly, welcoming and good value restaurant especially when so many others were closed!

I was staying at a local hotel with excellent food La Sapiniere) but the hotel restaurant shuts Sunday night sometimes. Walked down the street to Vieille Auberge. When you walk in don't be deterred by the v French regional appearance of restaurant. Food drink I had was really good v inexpensive. Great value worth a try in if you're in these parts. I have no connection with this place just a Brit who does know his food) visiting the delightful Auvergne.

Simple kitchen, generously served, pleasant. Energetic and friendly welcome. Excellent value for money.
