Maison Faurie - Bessines-sur-Gartempe

Back in Bessines for our favorite bakery. Because of covid, we had not visited for a very long time and we were surprised to find that Maison Faurie has had a complete facelift. It is not only a bakery but also a modern cafe and you can enjoy the imense selection of cakes in a pleasant surrounding. We were there to pick up our favorite Pate de pommes de terre et viande , one of the signature dishes of Faurie. But the sight of a clafoutis cake was too much and we could not resist bringing one with us. Leave the motorway and drop in at Maison Faurie. You will not forget it.

I didn’t expect such a great place in a small village. I’m used to it in bigger cities and towns around France but was pleasantly surprised to find it there. Fresh cakes and great selection. Their cookies are great too. If you’re having a dinner or lunch in a nearby restaurants think of skipping a desert and get one from this place.

We drive an extra minutes each way to come here every day. As a boulangerie it is head and shoulders above everyone else locally, and is one of the best I've ever visited. The croissants and pain au chocolate are dreamily light and tasty...and the pastries are true works of art, worthy of any high-class patisserie in Paris we can't help having a sneaky macaron each on the way out ! The bread is also great, can highly recommend the torchon. And if you're on your way out for the day, they have lovely baguette sandwiches In terms of atmosphere, it feels light. modern and very friendly. The first time we were there the woman serving us gave my little boy a small animal-shaped bread roll to munch as he was waiting. Lovely gesture. You can eat breakfast there with coffee/juice and it's very comfortable. If you're in the area, you'd be mad to go anywhere else !
