This is the best fish I've ever eaten in Berlin by far. The daily special on the day I went was a Mixed Fish platter served on a sizzling plate. The taste...
Decided to give this a shot- as are most places in Berlin, it's always a roll of the dice. Ordered the salmon salad fries and a glass of white...
Fisch Mekan is one of those places that is open throughout so I went there for a late lunch. The fish options are a bit more limited here than in comparable establishments (no shell fish and less fish variety) but they include the usual farmed salmon, dorado and sea bass. One can either have the fish on a plate with bread and a side salad, fish and chips or as a fish bun. I ended up with the sea bass (whole fish €15) on a plate. There are no cooking options other than grilled which was a bit disappointing as the restaurant bills itself as Mediterranean. Based on the waitress the fish is rubbed in a marinade of olives and garlic but I could taste neither of them. One basically gets some grill aromas that stem from the charcoal grill they use. At any rate the fish was well cooked but lacked taste overall. The Aijwar that was served on the side helped a bit but the remoulade was also pretty boring. The side salad was decent but again, the dressing was uninteresting. I added a serving of fries (€2.50 extra) and they were okay. There is a small outside seating area and some tables inside. The inside is pretty cramped though so do not expect any privacy in conversation here. Service was okay but the extra plate for the fish bones I had to get by myself from the kitchen. Overall an average choice. Having tried other fish restaurants in the area I would suggest you go to the Fischfabrik (across the road also on Danzigerstr.) or the Fischladen (on Schoenhauser Allee). They simply have more choices and the overall experience is better at a similar price level.
We were a group of ten and so pretty much took over the entire restaurant. it came highly recommended by locals, and did not disappoint. Mekan and his family had a good range of fresh fish on offer. Lovely mezze were followed by grilled calamari and other fish (not sure of their names). Wines and beers were available. It is easy to get to/from by public transport, even in the early hours, when we caught a night tram back to Alexanderplatz.
