Bidrage med feedbackWe met with friends here and it turned out to be an excellent meeting spot. The food was good although I wouldn't call it gourmet. The prices were reasonable. It is tucked away on a side street near the festival Hausen. As a helpful suggestion...I would recommend heaters for the outdoor section as the evenings do get cool. All in all, I definitely recommend!
Thanks to some previous TripAdvisor writers i have found this small place just outside the FestSpiele terrains. At first sight it looks a bit strange when confronted with it, a rather worn-out brick building and a signpost indicating that the Biergarten is at the courtyard,...indicated by an arrow. And indeed, Biergarten it is ! The number of dishes is limited (I think only five) but they are served very efficient and quick and the owner is full of jokes and indicates when people really should be going in order not to miss the next Akt of a Wagner masterpiece. Needless to say that the Beer is excellent as well the building is in fact an abandoned brewery. Having spent one break over there is a guarantee for returning there time and over again. To be avoided by people that go to the FestSpiele for being seen this is the least posh place in all Bayreuth.
This is an old-fashioned type of hostelry that were two-a-penny when I first moved to Germany in but which are, sadly, dying out in urban areas. The decor is from a bygone age, even if that age was only the but there are...few better places for sitting over an excellent glass of home brewed beer and a good bit of stodgy, tasty local food. Very reasonably priced and the owner loves to chat, too.
When you do not want to spend much during the intervals of the Bayreuther Festspiele, I can advice this Kneipe, as the Germans call it. Try the Currywurst mit Pommes!
Our group went to the Kropf which is under new ownership. It is under new ownership and called Mohrenbräu. It is still the closest place to the Festspielehaus on your way into town (Hollander Stuben is now closed). The prices are very reasonable and they...have their own craft-brewed fass bier here. The owner Klaus Kopszak was charming and friendly. We absolutely loved the leberkase (which contains no liver but mixed meat) with kraut and others savored Kurrywurst and Flamenkuche and the Bayern bratwurst and kartoffelsalat. The beers were fabulous. You can dine outdoors on the weekends but during the week they close the garden early because it is in a partially residential area. If you stop in please send the greetings of the San Francisco Wagner Society to Klaus.
