In the first year of college at R.V.Engineering College, Bangalore we had a major problem.Although the food in our mess was much better than most places, there was no proper restaurant which could be considered hygenic. In 1999 few shops opened up and finally a restaurant called-Hotel Dreamland came up..Its a very normal restaurant without any airconditioners but it is a perfect place for students. Our college is on the Mysore Road in Bangalore and I can easily say that Dreamland was/is the best restaurant in the nearby 10 kilometres.<br/ <br/ I fell in love with the chilly chicken and manchurian they used to serve. Instead of having noodles with it,I started having it with parathas.Try Chilly Chicken Gravy with Parathas and u will now what I mean. The parathas are of different types however the best one is Cylon paratha. It is rather big but for a foodie like me it is best bread.Kerala Parotha is round in shape and not bad either.Another favourite is Egg-parotha but its best when eaten just with some ketchup. Another Parotha is Kothu Parotha where the parotha is reduced to a scramble of egg and Parotha and is spicy. If u want to have rice with chicken gravy then u can chose between masala rice and ghee rice. Ghee rice as the name suggests is oily whereas Masala rice is the rice prepared for Biryani(without pieces). The dishes have generous helping and only if can hog a lot can u finish the full gravy urself as it has around 6-7 pieces of chicken. However the noodles and fried rice are the most consumed dishes of the day.I being anon-veg freak used to eat a lot of Chicken Noodles and Chicken Fried Rice.Years later on another visit, I realized Dreamland it has started a new Mixed Noddles and Mixed Fried Rice. Its an amazing dish for non-vegetarian.It has noodles with chunks and chunks of both chicken and mutton aptly fried and now the quality of noodles and its serving has considerably improved.Since the target customers are students the dishes were reasonably priced between 38-50 for the noodles and fried rice.Again the quantity is sufficient.I cannot count the number of times my friends and I have feasted on a plate of noodles/fried rice and lime juice.<br/ <br/ What made Dreamland click in a big way initially was the range of juices and shakes it serves.U get lime juice, orange, musambi and the tasty water melon juice.Among the shakes my favourite was banana shake and Cheeku-Saphota Shake. They also served custard apple shake and date shakes. Now they have a separate counter for shakes and the juice counter is full throughout the day.In the evenings after playing some sports one can spot lots of hostelites having some juice or Milo shake at dreamland.Since its just opposite the college we used to go there practically everyday.Even when we were out of cash we used to have big treats and then put the money in our ACCOUNTS-which were cleared later. The restaurant is run by Keralites Muslims so the non-veg food served is really good. The service is good and we obviously became friendly with the staff.<br/ <br/ For us ofcourse another favourite dish was Mutton/Chicken Biryani.Priced at a reasonable Rs.38/45,this was my personal dish.In the sense that a time came when I had Biryani for consecutively 4-5 days and the waiter used to just confirm whether I would have Biryani or some other dish. Here I would like to tell that Biryani is ready a bit late say around 12p.m. whereas noodles and other items are ready by 10 a.m.The biryani is in Keralite Mallu style style and served with a boiled egg on top.U get some gravy and this is the most economical heavy meal one can have here.At times if we were very hungry we would order our biryani and then order a side-dish mostly Chicken Kababs(A favourite Bangalorean dish) which would be shared by 2-3 people.Chicken kabab is totally different from the Lucknawi Kababs and are<br/ <br/ pieces of fried chicken which are spicy.Butter Chicken and Chicken Mughlai were also decent but could not be finished alone.<br/ <br/ For the vegetarians the Gobi manchurian(the most famous dish of Bangalore) was really good.I preferred the gravy one over the dry.The Paneer Butter Masala also was good. For me and most of my friends Dreamland meant much more than a hotel. It was a place where we used to hang out.We used to rag our juniors,we used to open our hearts to friends and discuss serious issues. We would go in a gang at times and stay there for 2 hours eating and chatting.Or at times my friend and myslef would go and sit for hours and have food and discuss movies, politics and underworld.<br/ <br/ Even 1.5 decade since it opened I saw the restaurant is still doing well when I visited Bangalore. The food quality is same and the prices(obviously not the same) but still comparatively reasonable than other places.
Hotel Dreamland is right opposite RV College. The place is frequented by the college students. Dreamland is the only eatery which has proper infrastructure, in the lane opposite RV College with others being roadside shacks. Have just been here once for Chicken Biryani. One portion for is adequate for an adult. <br/ <br/ On the whole, Dreamland offers good food at student-friendly prices.
