Bidrage med feedbackAntico Forno Santa Caterina is known for having one of the oldest ovens in Altamura. And, they certainly make excellent breads and focaccias in a city which is world reknown for its bread. But, we were pleasantly surprised to find that all of their food was outstanding. For example, we thoroughly enjoyed their bruschetta topped with stracciatella, their tomato and mozzarella salad and one of their veal entrees. They are conveniently open all day (they do not close between lunch and dinner as most restaurants in the area do) and provide outdoor dining only. In total, we enjoyed three lunches at Antico Forno Santa Caterina it is the perfect place for a light, casual meal.
We had arrived on a very early flight in Bari, and driving over to Matera decided to stop in Altamura. It claims to be the town where the best bread in Italy is made. We parked look for white parking spaces, which are free, or blue parking spaces, and look for a machine to pay . We wandered round the town, watching two weddings coming out of the churches in the September sunshine. We roamed through the old town and came across a tiny yard it really isnt a square and sat down. We had the focaccia with tomatoes, pizza, and bruschetta, all were wonderful, and warm from the oven. They also had beers for my husband. Sitting outside, full of delicious food, looking at the blue sky and listening to the heated talking going on round us made out 4:30 a.m. start seem worth while. If I was in the general vicinity I would make a detour to come back here.
