La Poule Noire - Albon

I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions for lunch with work colleagues. The restaurant is located in the centre of the village of Albon, and commands a nice part of the village centre, where you can dine outside in the sunshine or under shade. The interior of the restaurant is also quite pleasant. A lunchtime, we have always selected the menu option, which is a fixed lunch (with slight choice). The food quality I would rate as average, but it has always been very tasty and represents good value. The service has always been excellent.

About minutes from the Safran d’Or B&B (if one doesn’t get lost) is this outstanding local secret. Reserve ahead if you can. It is in the middle of a little village, parking available near the church; and it is a gourmet delight. We threw...our veggie selves on the mercy of the chef and got a lovely presentation with a delicious variety of veggies and polenta. Our only regret was that as in days of yore in France, the quantities were modest. (Nowadays, many French chefs are getting used to catering to the huge appetites of Americans the Brits, but don’t count on it). Salads were very fresh and fairly generous; the desserts were mouth-watering. We would advise most folks who wish to eat economically to take the “menu” (also called the prix fixe) of one level or another: That will get you the best deal and give you a chance to try new wonderful culinary options. As with other deep-France countryside locations, you will not be able to fully trust your GPS. Know how to read a map and take one with you everywhere. Also, learn some basic French expressions for use in asking for directions. This is so helpful in getting the cooperation one needs
