The miso soup flavor is just right. The teriyaki sauce is just right. They char the teriyaki beef, which is a bonus. The green tea is really good! They get the staples right. We came early on a Friday night around 5:30-6 and had to wait a couple minutes and shortly after more people came and had to wait longer. Luckily this place takes reservations. I hope this place sticks around and will be coming here regularly.
Came here on a rainy Saturday for lunch around noon. We were welcomed warmly and seated immediately. There were a number of other families They have a number of lunch combos. We got the hot udon, teriyaki chicken, California roll combo and the pork Katsu combo. The portions are generous and the food is good. The variety is great when eating with a kiddo. Daughter loved the hot udon. The curry is delicious and the pork katsu is crispy on the outside and satisfyingly thick. Lovely neighborhood restaurant with generous portions and fresh food.
This place was packed on a Sunday night!!! The weather has been getting really cold and Hotaru always hits the right spots! There is plenty of street parking but you might need to walk a bit as it gets busy during dinner time. When my friends and I come here, we usually open for one of their dinner specials. The nigiri set choice of udon/soba comes with a lot of nigiri. I like to get the hot udon! You do have the option to get it hot or cold. I've tried many different places for amaebi but this place has it the best. I forgot to take a picture but they deep fried the shrimp heads for you and it's good to eat when it's fresh out of the kitchen!
Had a great dining experience here at Hotaru. Portion sizes were definitely generous, and there was a wide variety of Japanese dishes to choose from. A lot of flexibility in terms of choice, and the food was fresh! The beef sukiyaki was good, but the meat was a little tough and was thicker than expected for typical sukiyaki beef slices. The sauce was very good, however, and other dishes such as the curry, Udon, and katsu were great! Very worth it in terms of price!
We recently came here on a Thursday night after not have come for a long time (i.e., years). I don't know why we seem to have forgotten about this place but I'm glad we rediscovered it. The ambience is simple, there must be 10 or so tables and the staff is friendly. They do give you a lot of food. I ordered udon special, which came with udon, a small salad, and then I chose tonkatsu and a California roll (there were other choices I could've gotten). My wife got the Salmon Kama set (no picture, sorry; we got too excited) which came with teriyaki salmon collar (although she could have just gotten it salted), seaweed salad, fried tofu soup, and miso soup. All in all it was very enjoyable.
