This restaurant is fabulous. Perfect spot for a romantic dinner. Table with a stunning view over the lake. Extremely friendly and professional staff. The food is brilliant: I can recommend the Speziale Risotto and the Kalbfleisch meat that melts in your mouth so soft! This place is a gem and I hope we can come back soon. Service: Dine in
One of the most pleasant surprises during a recent trip to the Italian part of Switzerland was a visit to Ristorante Panoramico. You don't need to stay at the boutique hotel La Rocca of which it is a part to eat there. The food was divine, the view from the terrace on Lago Maggiore and Isole di Brissago fantastic and the service very friendly - and taking into account the prices in fashionable locations (like Ascona) in Switzerland, the prices were very reasonable. I'm almost hesitant to write a review because I hope this place will not be overrun and change. The menu at lunch time is very limited but at least for us there was more than enough to choose from. My husband and I both had a delicious cold melon soup as a starter, and the waiter made it sound like no trouble at all to see to that the prosciutto ham it would have been served with was added to my husband's portion instead. I'll recommend the fish dish - fried fish (I forget which, but it was delicious) with a wonderful risotto with herbs and a bed of summer vegetables to anyone who likes any of these components. My husband praised his coffee risotto. Yes, you read that right. There were several rather innovative risottos to choose from on the menu. The risotto portion was not that big (probably because traditionally you would follow with a main dish) but seemed to keep hunger at bay - and the price of it was barely more than 20 CHF, a very good deal for a fabulous place like this. The excellent fish dish cost no more than a rather average meal including fish would in a much less fancy place in Switzerland. So where's the thorn on this rose? The road to Ronco sopra Ascona is rather narrow, so you can't be scared of Amalfi coast style driving, and it seemed like there's only two parking spots for guests not staying at the hotel (although I could be wrong about that). Since public transport is so good in Switzerland, you can take a bus nearby though, and walk a little uphill. Oh, and it's only open roughly March - October, so check before you plan. Visiting this restaurant could be easily combined with a visit to the Isole di Brissago botanical garden on Lago Maggiore (to do so, take the (expensive) ship from Ascona or Brissago - the price will feel less bad after a lunch at Ristorante Panoramico).
