I was actually pleasantly surprised as normally the only time I would eat somewhere like this would be if I was travelling (on a road trip). The food was pretty good and the service was excellent. I did think it was a bit expensive but to be honest that is France in general so not really an isolated issue with this restaurant.
We have eaten at this restaurant several times during our stays in Perpignan and were never disappointed. Food: excellent all in taste, quality and presentation. Generous portions. Tasty food. The menu lists where the meat has been sourced from. Service: Very child friendly. Balloons, sweets and colouring in books/crayons for the little ones to go at while you wait for your food. Waiters/waitresses very competent, friendly and attentive, able to communicate with English speaking diners too. We had experienced quite hostile 'service ' from staff in cafe 's in nearby rural France so it was both refreshing and a relief to be made to feel welcome in this establishment. Amenities: toilets clean as a whistle, ample on site parking. Verdict: if you have ever holidayed in France you will no doubt have eaten in a Buffalo Grill at some stage. Hyppopotamus is several notches up from BG in that it serves good, tasty char grilled beef/chicken dishes, salads, hamburgers, but in a more stylish setting that both suits couples looking for a romantic meal as well as families and other groups looking for something more informal. They don 't take reservations so be prepared to wait for a table if you arrive after 7.00pm on Fridays or Saturdays. Mid week seemed to be quiet but remember that almost ALL French restaurants stop serving food at 9.pm, the reason for which I still cannot work out...
A family meal on December to evening already it should be noted that very few restaurants are open. at the reception and service we were at the top ... everyone at the small care. We're all happy. If I had to make a remark, it will be to offer a custom seasoning for the steak tartare. without hesitation I advise you to come and eat at this hippopotamus
