Kerala Cafe - Gaithersburg

The food at Kerala Cafe is as close to authentic Kerala house cooking as possible 8000 miles away from the real deal. They had classic vegetarian Malayali delicacies like carrots and cabbage toran, Avial and Elai Adai on their buffet menu. The Elai Adai reminded me of the Pullayar Kozaikattai from home. They also had a separate section for non-vegetarian and Nordic foods, but I did not review it. The Sambarai a light yogurt soup mixed with curry leaves and green Indian chilis was a complete and pleasant surprise. The Kappa Kazhangu was perfection! The onion pakoras were super crunchy, fresh and non-greasy (I hate those fat frozen that they have freed Indian restaurants on the run of the mill! We went a little late to the weekend buffet, but the owner was gracious enough to allow us to taste the food on the buffet. The Gulab Jamuns looked like they were made by scratches and we later confirmed that they were! I was blown away from the quality of the foods. The spices in the raw mangopfel were just like the one my mother had done earlier. Every single dish of food was tasty and tasted as if it had been made from fresh ingredients from home. Perhaps the best in the café are the people who walk the place on earth and are fully committed to quality. They are what makes Malayalis the most friendly and sincere people on the subcontinent. The café lives up to the high standards of the state. I was in several South Indian restaurants around NYC, Upstate New York, California and DC. Kerala Cafe simply has the best food and is one of the top handfuls for its service. I will go back until I have tasted all their offers that we have heard they change their menus every day. This is quite exciting considering that the range of Malayali and South Indian food floats in the head. If you are in Rockville, you cannot miss this place! Malayali food is hard to nail, but Kerala Cafe makes it very good.
