I had passed by this place a couple times on the way to another restaurant, always thinking I should stop. Today is Christmas and most of Arequipa is closed. In my wanders, Chefbastiani is open for business (yes, there is a Santa Claus) I slipped in and had a great octopus plate, called pulpobastiani. Imagine slices of pulpo carpacchio in a green sauce. Of course I added aji. Wow! wished I had stopped in sooner. This is a very nice restaurant with a nice selection of seafoods and ceviches. The prices are very reasonable.
There are so many ceviche places to choose from in Arequipa. We hit the jackpot when we entered ChefBastiani. The grilled octopus, a shared appetizer, was fresh and spectacularly prepared. My own dish, a seafood risotto would have been the envy of any Italian chef. And it was hard to not want to encroach upon some of the other dishes that were on the table. Good manners won the day, though a ceviche using a tart sauce made from passion fruit looked especially inviting. I vowed to return before my trip was over as other items on the menu and on other people's table looked like sure winners. Alas, the trip was too short. The next time I'm there I will definitely try the Parihuela, which looked like a Peruvian Bouillabaisse.
